After analysing the power consumption patterns for the farm for approximately three weeks we recommended a 90kW PV system to offset this farmer’s daytime grid consumption. There were some peaks and troughs in the power consumption graphs that does match a typical solar power production curve, but our innovative client has got plans to shift his consumption to better match the solar production. Since one of the biggest consumers of power on a diary farm is the cooling of the milk, innovative methods can be applied to store extra solar energy in the form of a cold medium (in this case a large tank with Propylene Glycol / water mixture is being considered) that can later be used to cool the milk (the cows are milked three times per day, of which only one time frame is in peak solar production hours).
